07/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Alain Lamasoure MEP (UMP) could possibly become a European Commissioner by replacing Jacques Barrot. According to the newspaper, Libération, Jacques Barrot could replace Nicholas Sarkozy at the department of economics, following his election as president of the UMP. According to Agence France Presse, French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin underlined during an UMP summer school in Avoriaz, that Jacques Barrot will have "significant responsibilities" in the Barroso Commission as Head of transport, contrary to the "bad faith" expressed by certain elements. Therefore, Mr Raffarin exclaimed, "Let's look at things closely. What's important for France today is our employment policy, which depends, notably, on our large industrial sectors…Airbus, Alstrom, our car industries, transport for which France is the Champion in Europe".
