07/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has proposed to share control of the port of Famagusta with the Turkish Cypriots, in exchange for the return of the town of Varosha to the Greek Cypriots, according to a spokesperson for his government, quoted by AFP. The Council of the EU is divided for the time being on the European Commission's proposal to open direct trade relations between the north and south of the island (see EUROPE of 1 September, p.5).
