07/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Tajana Zdanoka MEP (Greens/EFA, Latvia), who was stopped at Riga airport last week on her return from Brussels, without being given an explanation, has written to president Borrell, requesting that he notify the Latvian authorities that they had to guarantee the right of members of the European Parliament "freedom of movement in Member States in order to fulfil their democratic mandate". Ms Zdanoka, who is in the opposition in her country and who is known for her commitment to human rights, indicated in a press statement that she had gone back to her country to take part in demonstrations against new legislation that planned to "dismantle the education system in minority languages". Her passport was taken away from her without any explanation but she was later able to enter her country. In a communiqué, the MEP denounced the "tactic" of the Latvian authorities to "exert psychological pressure" on opponents.
