FERA appeals for "creative" aspect to audio-visual policy

Brussels, 07/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - As part of the Festival of Film in Venice, The Federation of European Film Directors (FERA), has indicated that it will "take on board" the new structure planned for audio-visual policy in the shake-up of the Barroso Commission Directorates General (audio-visual will be twinned with Information Society) but has certain fears that the "creative" aspect to this policy could be drowned out by "economic" considerations. In a press statement, FERA underlined that there could be no question that audio-visual is watered down in a vision that is purely commercial and technical. FERA added that audio-visual was part of the services of general interest and therefore had to be integrated essentially into the creative dimension. The Federation was pleased that Commissioner Viviane Reding, currently in charge of education, culture, audio-visual and sport will in the future be in charge of these new responsibilities. FERA stated that this would provide an opportunity for extending and strengthening policy that she had successfully carried out in audio-visual and cultural affairs. The federation also highlighted the struggle by Ms Reding to defend cultural diversity, public aid to the sector and the increase in the budget allocated to the Media 2007-13 plan.
