Brussels, 18/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a statement adopted on Wednesday, the European Council hailed Resolution 1540 of the UN Security Council on the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). It points out that Member States have committed themselves to adopting common policies with regard to criminal penalties for illegal exports, trafficking and smuggling of WMD, in the context of the European strategy to combat the proliferation of WMD (signed on 12 December 2003).
