Electoral system: party list system; proportional representation; threshold of 5
For the first time, members of the European Parliament will be elected on a regional basis. The French territory has been divided up into eight large constituencies. Seven of these cover the mainland of France, and one covers the overseas territories.
I - NORTH/WEST (12 seats)
Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP): the party in government which belongs to the EPP-ED group has chosen Tokia Saïfi (45), currently Secretary of State for sustainable development, to head its list. She is followed by: - regional councillor in Haute-Normandie Jean-Paul Gauzes; - Marguerite Deprez-Audebert, a businesswoman.
Union pour la démocratie française (UDF): outgoing MEP Jean-Louis Bourlanges (58) heads the list for François Bayrou's party, ahead of Brigitte Fouré, the mayor of Amiens.
Parti socialiste (PS): - senator Henri Weber (60); - former minister Marie-Noëlle Lienemann (53), who has already been an MEP; - former MP Vincent Peillon (44).
Parti radical de gauche (PRG): Julien Duquenne.
Parti communiste français (PCF): - mayor of Calais Jacky Henin (43); - senator and former minister Michelle Terryn Demessine; - former MP Christina Cuvilliez, mayor of Dieppe.
Lutte ouvrière et Ligue communiste révolutionnaire (LO/LCR): the trotskyite list is headed by regional councillor Nicole Baudrin, a midwife.
Greens: - outgoing MEP Hélène Flautre (46); - Jean-Pierre Lancry (52), member of the ANT, a body responsible for employment issues and the training of citizens from overseas territories.
Rassemblement pour la France (RPF): Patrice Hernu heads the list for Charles Pasqua's party.
Chasse, pêche, nature traditions (CPNT): farmer Didier Vergy heads the hunting party's list.
Mouvement pour la France (MPF): the list for Mr de Villiers movement is headed by outgoing MEP Yves Butel (55), a physiotherapist and deputy mayor of Abbeville, elected on the CPNT list in 1999.
Front national (FN): outgoing MEP Carl Lang (47), a physiotherapist, heads the extreme right-wing list.

II - WEST (10 seats)
UMP: - former ecology minister Roseline Bachelot; - regional councillor for Bretagne Ambroise Guellec (63); - former chairman of the regional council of Poitou-Charentes Elisabeth Morin (57), who was beaten last March by the Socialist Ségolène Royal.
UDF: - outgoing MEP Philippe Morillon (68), general, former commander of the United Nations forces in Bosnia; - Chairman of the Europe House in Rennes, Jeanne-Françoise Hutin, who is also married to the chief of the biggest regional daily newspaper Ouest France.
PS: - outgoing MEP Betrand Poignant (59); - Bernadette Vergnaud (54), deputy mayor of Poitiers; - Stéphane Le Foll (44), head of François Hollande's cabinet.
PRG: defender of the marine environment Jo Le Guen.
PCF: Patrick Le Hyaric, director of L'Humanité.
LO/LCR: Hélène Defrance (54), a teacher.
Greens: - former MP Marie-Hélène Aubert (47), a teacher; - Gérard Borvon, who campaigns for environmentally-friendly farming in Brittany.
CPNT: Fabrice Sanchez, mayor of Masserac.
MPF: - Philippe de Villiers (55), MP and chairman of the General Council of the Vendée; - Béatrice Jobbe Duval; - outgoing MEP Dominique Souchet (58), who is very active in fisheries dossiers. Outgoing MEP Georges Berthu is in fifth place on the list.
FN: Samuel Marechal (37), son-in-law of Jean-Marie Le Pen.
Among the lists not represented in the EP are "L'Ouest au couer" (The West at the heart of it), headed by MP for the UMP Michel Hunault (44), a lawyer who is also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. That list also includes Morgane Poivre d'Arvor, a lawyer and daughter of the presenter of the daily news on TF1, and also Annick Roland du Roscoat, the chairman of the National Centre for independents and farmers.
