Strasbourg, 11/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - By adopting in first reading (co-decision) of the report by Luis Berenguer Fuster (PES, Spain) on the draft revision of the direction on electromagnetic compatibility (EUROPE 22 January 2003), the European Parliament has agreed to the technical amendments proposed by the rapporteur on the field of the proposal's application (namely its use with certain kinds of equipment) and the specific demands required for permanent installations. The proposal seeks to revise the 1989 directive on electric and electronic equipment (which regulate electromagnetic emissions: microwaves, for example, which should not interfere with radio reception) and whose essential objective is to simplify regulatory procedures for manufacturers (getting rid of certain procedures, cost reduction), while improving information and documentation on products in order to provide the means for additional inspections by the monitoring authorities (better traceability of the product). The "Competitiveness" Council produced a "general orientation" on the draft last November (EUROPE 11 November 2003). The vote at Parliament is going to allow it to transform it into a common position in the next few weeks.
