Brussels, 11/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, published a series of statistics on the EU enlarged to twenty-five member nations compared to the EU of fifteen and the United States. The new data (to be published in our Selected Weekly Statistics No 1323 of Saturday 13 March) shows, for example, that with enlargement the EU will increase its population by 20% (to reach 454.9 million inhabitants compared to 291.4 million for the United States) but that its GDP will only be 5% bigger. Statistics also show that, among the ten acceding countries, life expectancy is the highest in Cyprus and Malta and that circulatory disorders are generally more widespread in the ten new member countries.
