Brussels, 11/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - Member States are expected to confirm on Monday at the Special Agriculture Committee (SAC) an agreement on a proposal to amend the 1997 provisions on action to improve production and sales of honey. During the last SAC last Monday, representatives from Member States agreed to set up three year programmes (instead of the current one year programmes) and called on the European Commission to not get rid of Community co-funding for measures focusing on honey analysis. The Commission was proposing to put an end to this in order to concentrate resources on priority action decided on by the different countries (the fight against varroatosis, technical assistance, rationalisation of transhumance). Action could be funded by the Community budget for restocking the number of bees that have been declining in some regions. The draft paper intends to postpone the date for new Member States having to present the Commission with their national programmes by a month (15 April-15 May).
