Irish presidency wants Agriculture Council to take responsibility for authorising genetically modified sweetcorn BT 11 DE SYNGENTA

Brussels, 11/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Irish presidency has just decided that the Agriculture Council of 26-27 April will be responsible for deciding on the authorisation of marketing the genetically modified corn BT 11 produced by the Swiss Syngenta company. This modified sweetcorn is herbicide resistant and was notified to the Commission in 1998 under the "New Food" regulation for authroitsation on EU markets for human food and animal feed but which did not include cultivation.
