26/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, Basque Nationalist MEP Josu Ortuondo welcomes the fact that the EP Committee on Transport had, on Tuesday, approved an amendment to the report by French Socialist Bernard Poignant on changing ship registers within the EU (to which we shall return) calling for all ships sailing under the flag of EU Member Sattes to include the EU symbol of a circle of twelve stars against a blue background on their ships' flags. Noting that the possibility of creating a single European register provoked "clear opposition within certain Member States that fear the loss of identity", Mr Ortuondo proposed therefore that registration at the level of Member States should be maintained, but that the symbol of the EU should be added to the flag of ships thus "displaying across the world the existence of a European Union set to approve a Constitutional Treaty".
