Words "Republic of Cyprus" to be used in Accession Treaty despite Turkish opposition

Brussels, 08/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Greek Presidency of the EU has rejected a request by the Turkish government that the words "Republic of Cyprus" used in the Accession Treaty to be signed in Athens on 16 April be replaced by "Cyprus". In a letter to the Greek Presidency and the fifteen current EU Member States, the Turkish foreign minister Abdullah Gul asked for the wording to be changed because Turkey ceased to recognise the Republic of Cyprus after the events of 1974.
