Strasbourg, 13/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has requested aid of EUR 150 million to be paid to fishermen to help them get over the cod crisis. This is part of the resolution by British Conservative Struan Stevenson, President of the Fisheries Committee and adopted by the European Parliament. The EP is calling on the Commission to present a proposal by 30 June on this subject and considers that the additional finance required is compatible with the ceiling of section 2 (structural actions) for financial perspectives. The EP is requesting the Commission and Council to make sure that any revision to the current Community measures for preserving cod, help to increase the chance of replenishing stocks. Franz Fischler, announced that the Commission would be adopting his proposal on provisional adaptation measures next week, while the longer term strategy for protecting cod stocks (and hake in particular), will be presented in mid-April.
