Brussels, 13/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has authorised the British group RMC UK and United Marine Aggregates (UMA), a joint venture between the Anglo-America and Hanson groups, to create a joint undertaking on the Isle of Wight (UK). Called Isle of Wight Aggregates, the new firm will group the activities of the parties in the sector of aggregate processing and distribution (sand, gravel and crushed rock) extracted from quarries or dredged from the sea. This material is used for the manufacture of concrete, coated stone, railway ballast and in general building and construction applications. The Commission has noted that the Isle of Wight is the only geographical market likely to be affected by the operation as, being a relatively small island, its position in this sector compared to that of the United Kingdom as a whole is relatively insubstantial. The Commission specifies that the Isle of Wight is not a substantial part of the common market and that it is therefore not in a position to review the effects of the operation on competition in the Isle of Wight.
