Hunger strike against on-line elections by European Council of Students

Brussels, 14/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The member of the Bonino list, Maurizio Turco MEP has asked for information of the European Commission on the partnership between the EU and the pilot-project "EU-Student Vote" (http://www.eusv.org ). Between 9 and 23 May, the latter is organising the on-line elections of the "European Council of Students", in which it is a question of providing the role of representative of some 12 million students from Member States "in Community institutions". Mr. Turco is protesting against the expulsion from this electoral competition of candidates of the "European Anti-prohibitionist Students" for having placed into question the system of electronic voting that was chosen.. According to the anti-prohibitionist students, this system, indeed, could not guarantee the control of the validity of the votes cast. Five of the twenty anti-prohibitionist candidates have reacted by beginning a hunger strike for an unlimited period to secure from Commission President Romano Prodi the withdrawal of the partnership between the EU and the EUSV, as well as the non-recognition by the Council of the outcome of these elections. Is the EU financing this pilot project or one of its partners?, asks Mr. Turco, for his part.
