Brussels, 14/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission adopted its "country strategy paper" for Vietnam. The paper sets the framework for Community assistance for the period 2002-2006. A budget of EUR 162 million is foreseen, of which EUR 101 million will be granted in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The aim of the EU is to facilitate and speed up the reduction of poverty in Vietnam in a lasting manner. Preference is given to two action areas: human development and the integration of Vietnam in the international economy. Support to human development will be ensured through the rural development of the less advantaged provinces and by efforts in the field of education. In order to promote the country's integration in the international economy, assistance to reforms aimed at making Vietnam a market economy will be provided, as well as support for its integration in regional and global economic structures. Above all, the EU will support Hanoi's accession to the WTO. Cooperation will also bear on the environment, culture, education, sexual equality, human rights and good governance.
