Tendency for government deficit to fall confirmed in 2000 - UMTS licence sales accounted for 1.2% of GDP in EU15

Brussels, 14/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The provisional data supplied to Eurostat by the Member States for 2000 show that the government balance of the Eurozone and EU15 moved into surplus, while the ratio of debt to GDP continued to decline. Even excluding the sale of UMTS (3rd generation mobile phones) licences, the declining trend in the government deficit continued. For the Eurozone, the government balance moved from a deficit of 1.3% of GDP in 1999 to a 0.3% surplus in 2000, and the EU15...
