27/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - Following the failure of negotiations on an EU/Morocco fisheries agreement that would have mainly been to the advantage of Spanish fisheries, the Socialist Group at the Congress of Deputies called for the resignation of Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Miguel Arias Canete. Furthermore, the president of the Andalusian Junta, Mr Chavez, proposed encouraging private agreements with Moroccan shipowners in order to allow the Andalusian fleet to pursue its activities in Moroccan waters. This fleet is essentially non-industrial (unlike the industrial fleet of which part may be or has already been deployed towards other fishing zones) and could become the preferred target of restructuring made indispensable by the lack of an agreement with Morocco.
