Mr Wurtz calls for debate on AIDS during September session

Brussels, 29/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - Francis Wurtz, President of the GUE/NGL, recently wrote to the President of the European Parliament Nicole Fontaine to call for the draft agenda for the September plenary session to be revised so as to include a Commission and Council declaration on the follow-up to be made to the Durban international conference on AIDS". To give all the scope to the undertakings made by the Commission and Council on this occasion, Mr Wurtz proposes that the Parliament invites members of Onusida, together with association fighting against AIDS in Europe, representatives from large pharmaceutical laboratories and international financial institutions, to assist in these talks.

The principal of a roundtable gathering together, in the near future, all the representatives could even be adopted, so as to involve all the actors concerned in the concretising on the measures considered", writes Francis Wurtz, for whom, also "the Parliament would in the future take part in the initiative announced, both at a European level by the French Presidency, as at a global level, within the G8 in Okinawa".
