Several Member States would like discussion on relevance of sanctions on Serbia and some would like the summit with the countries of the Western Balkans to be brought forward

Brussels, 10/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - During the "open debate" on the Balkans which, on Monday opened the first General Affairs Council under the French Presidency, several ministers spoke in favour of a review of the policy of sanctions currently being applied against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Several of them also spoke out in favour of bringing forward the summit between the EU and the countries of the Western Balkans so that it precedes the forthcoming elections in FRY.
