Lord Russell-Johnston welcomes abolition of death penalty in Ukraine

Strasbourg, 06/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Lord Russell-Johnston, welcomed the decision of the Ukrainian Constitutional Court declaring the death penalty unconstitutional, and said he was confident that it would soon be followed by the formal signing of Protocol 6 (abolition of the death penalty) of the European Human Rights Convention.
