Commission calls on Italian authorities to verify quality of controls carried out on oil-tanker Erika before it sank, and is examining means to strengthen European legislation

Brussels, 06/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - Further to the sinking of the oil-tanker Erika on 12 December off the French coast, the director for maritime transport at the European Commission, Georgette Lalis, called on Italian authorities to verify the quality of controls made on the Erika, in May 1999, in Porto Torres in Italy. She called for information to be provided by the company which carried out the inspection.
