NATO determined to work for preservation, universalisation and full implementation of Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons

21/04/2026 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 21 April, at the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), NATO countries underlined their determination to fully implement this treaty at a time when the security environment is deteriorating and proliferation crises are worsening. “As long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO will remain a nuclear alliance. The fundamental purpose of NATO’s nuclear capability is to preserve peace, prevent coercion, and deter aggression”, said the Allies in a statement. They promised that they would continue to fulfil their obligations under the NPT. The Allies continue to adhere to all the objectives of the Treaty, including those of Article VI, “with a view towards worldwide verifiable elimination of nuclear weapons, based on the principle of undiminished security for all”.
