04/03/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 3 March, the European Commission adopted a proposal in which it asks the Council of the EU to authorise it to conduct negotiations with the Republic of Mauritius with a view to concluding a new Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement. The current four-year protocol implementing the agreement came into force on 21 December 2022 and will expire on 21 December this year (see EUROPE 13201/13). It provides fishing opportunities for tuna and highly migratory species for EU vessels from four Member States: Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. The EU’s annual public financial contribution due to Mauritius amounts to €275,000 for access, plus €450,000 specifically earmarked for sectoral support to fisheries policy.
