14/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 14 June, the European Parliament approved the conclusion of the new fisheries agreement between the EU and Mauritius. The report by François-Xavier Bellamy (EPP, French) on this proposal was adopted with 526 votes in favour, 37 against and 52 abstentions (see EUROPE 13188/35). This agreement allows the EU fleet to fish for tuna: 5,500 tonnes for 40 purse seiners, 45 surface longliners and authorised EU auxiliary vessels (see EUROPE 13023/4). The new protocol provides for a total financial contribution of €275,000 per year for access to Mauritian waters, €275,000 per year for support to Mauritius’s fisheries sector policy and €175,000 for the implementation of the maritime policy and the development of the blue economy.
