06/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 6 February, the representatives of the Member States of the European Union, meeting within the Technical Committee for Adaptation to Waste, approved an implementing decision aimed at stimulating the recycling of plastics by chemical processes (see EUROPE 13801/10). The calculation criteria used to measure the quantity (currently 25%, 30% by 2030) of plastic recycled by mechanical means in the manufacture of single-use plastic bottles will now be extended to include chemical recycling. According to AFP, recycling by chemical process will make it possible, for example, to incorporate products from the recycling of yoghurt pots into the manufacture of these bottles. Environmental organisations have warned that this is a very energy-intensive process. (MB)
