ILGA-Europe raises issue of health discrimination against LGBTQI people in Europe

On Wednesday 4 February, the European branch of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, ILGA-Europe, published a report analysing the health inequalities experienced by LGBTQI people in Europe.

This document is based on data from the third LGBTIQ III survey carried out in 2023 by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, which collected over 100,000 responses in the 27 Member States as well as in Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia.

The survey, carried out by ILGA-Europe on the basis of ten questions relating to access to healthcare, general state of health, mental health and HIV and cancer screening, revealed multiple forms of discrimination.

Trans, non-binary and intersex people report more refusals of treatment, more inappropriate comments and more avoidance of consultations. Also, half of intersex and non-binary people report a long-term illness.

According to ILGA-Europe, tackling these problems in the EU would require improved training for carers, the development of mental support services and data collection.
