30/01/26 (Agence Europe) – In 2024, the EU saw a 4.8% increase in its nuclear electricity generation compared to the previous year, with 649,524 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity produced in 12 EU countries. Eurostat reported on Thursday 29 January that this was the second consecutive year of growth after the decline recorded in 2022 (609,255 GWh). Nuclear power plants represented 23.3% of the EU’s total electricity production. As the EU’s leading nuclear electricity producer, France generated 58.6% of the EU’s nuclear electricity, followed by Spain (8.4%), Sweden (7.8%), and Finland (5%). Nuclear electricity generation also increased the most in France (+12.5%). Eurostat notes by way of reminder that Germany had, until 2021, been the EU’s second largest producer of nuclear electricity before it completely stopped generating nuclear power in April 2023.
