On Friday, 30 January, the European Commission announced that it had released €63 million in humanitarian aid in order to respond to the crisis in Myanmar and its repercussions in neighbouring countries.
Part of the EU’s initial 2026 allocation for South and Southeast Asia, this portion of the budget aims to support the populations affected by the conflict triggered by the military coup, which is now entering its fifth year.
Over €38.6 million of this amount will be earmarked for Myanmar – to fund emergency nutrition and food aid, shelter for displaced individuals, healthcare, and emergency education.
Some €23.4 million will go to Bangladesh to support nearly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees with aid in the form of food, shelter, healthcare, and education.
Given the regional dimension of the conflict, an additional €1 million will support refugees and local populations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. “The EU remains committed to helping the most vulnerable communities”, declared Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib, calling on all parties to “respect international humanitarian law”.
