On Tuesday 16 December, the European Commission published its latest report on the EU’s agricultural prospects up to 2035, forecasting a slowdown in productivity growth against a backdrop of numerous challenges.
According to the report, the EU is expected to remain self-sufficient in cereals, meat and dairy products.
Other indicators: EU cereal production is set to increase slightly, driven by improved wheat yields thanks to technological advances, and by growing demand for oats; European demand for animal feed is set to decrease; the sugar sector is facing structural changes; European demand for biofuels is expected to increase in the short term, before declining between 2028 and 2035; milk production should remain stable overall; EU beef production should continue to fall, while poultry production is expected to increase; the EU olive oil sector is set to recover from historically low production levels; and wine consumption in the EU is set to continue its downward trend.
