Ahead of the Franco-German Summit on Digital Sovereignty (see other news), to be held in Berlin, a dozen industry organisations published a joint statement on Monday 17 November calling for strategic action aimed at “building Europe’s strategic digital autonomy”.
In this list of grievances, the signatories set out what they believe is necessary for the EU to adopt a truly sovereign digital policy, and hope to see real progress emerge from the summit.
The letter calls, for example, for the introduction of a European preference in public procurement in the digital and new technologies sectors, a new framework and greater flexibility for mergers and acquisitions, particularly in startups.
The organisations are also calling for harmonisation of the European regulatory framework, without necessarily leading to deregulation. They want to see the emergence of the ‘28th regime’, which should offer a single legal status for tech startups and scaleups, to facilitate their cross-border growth within the EU.
