12/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – The regulation on the deployment of high-speed networks in the EU (known as the ‘Gigabit Infrastructure Act’) entered into force on Wednesday 12 November. This regulation, on which the provisional agreement was approved by the EU Council in May 2024 (see EUROPE 13402/31), aims to simplify and accelerate the deployment of high-speed networks, such as fibre optics and 5G, with a view to achieving Europe’s connectivity objectives. It should also make it possible to reduce the high costs of deploying networks and infrastructures, partly linked to the procedures for granting permits, which have been reviewed (see EUROPE 13344/5). These networks must also support the emergence of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The regulation provides for new rules on the digitalisation of infrastructure installation authorisation procedures and improved cooperation between operators for civil engineering works. (IS)
