On Wednesday 12 November, the European Union congratulated the Iraqi people on exercising their democratic right to vote in the legislative elections held on 11 November.
With a turnout of 55%, more Iraqis turned out to vote than in 2018 and 2021. The list of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, is said to be in the lead.
“This election represents an important opportunity for Iraq to strengthen its institutions, ensuring inclusiveness and accountability, and consolidate its political future”, stressed the spokesman for the European External Action Service in a press release. He praised the efforts of all those who contributed to the organisation and smooth running of the vote.
“The EU now encourages the political actors to support the formation of a government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people”, the spokesman said, adding that the EU was ready to continue accompanying Iraq as a partner in advancing its democratic and reformist agenda and ensuring a peaceful future.
