In a letter dated Thursday 2 October, a number of logistics operators, hauliers and energy companies called on the European Commission to propose, by the end of 2025, a regulation setting binding zero emission targets for large shippers and buyers of transport services.
“Accelerating fleet renewal investments is essential to achieve the decarbonisation of the heavy-duty sector”, they wrote. In their view, this would send “a strong signal that the EU is a leading market for zero-emission vehicles, attracting investments and creating jobs”.
They also reiterated their support for the European Commission’s proposed legislative initiative on clean corporate vehicles, announced in March (see EUROPE 13717/10). “A corporate fleet target would be a powerful tool to support European manufacturers, as well as large shippers and buyers of transport services, in their transition to zero-emission vehicles”.
They stressed, however, that these targets must be accompanied by favourable conditions, in particular a sufficient supply of zero-emission vehicles, the deployment of charging infrastructure and the extension of the electricity grid (see EUROPE 13710/8).
