03/10/25 (Agence Europe) – Zero Waste Europe and over 150 civil society organisations have called for a moratorium on the authorisation and construction of new waste incinerators in the EU, in a letter sent to the European Commission and EU Member States on Tuesday 30 September. The signatories point out that the EU already has an overcapacity in waste incineration, a model deemed to have high “carbon intensity” and described as a “climate liability”. According to these organisations, building new incinerators in the EU “would entrench high-emission infrastructure for decades”. This would run counter to the objectives of climate neutrality, as well as the desire expressed by communities living close to existing incinerators to combat their impact on health. “A moratorium is a necessary first step to protect public health”, said Janek Vähk of Zero Waste Europe.
