24/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 24 July, at the request of Cyprus, the European Union activated its civil protection mechanism following a fire on the island, in the Limassol district. Two Canadair aircraft stationed in Spain and forming part of the EU’s joint fire-fighting fleet, RescEU, were mobilised through the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre. This summer, the EU provided support in response to the fires in Albania, North Macedonia and Syria, with RescEU equipment from Greece, Italy, Croatia, Germany and France. 670 firefighters from 14 countries were also pre-positioned in Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy and France to support local responses.
