On Tuesday 24 June, members of the European Parliament’s Development Committee (DEVE) and Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee (ENVI) will vote on a draft report prepared by Robert Biedroń (S&D, Polish) and Nikolas Farantouris (The Left, Greek), which assesses the state of progress in the EU towards implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN.
The text also aims to prepare the European Parliament’s position for the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, to be held from 14 to 18 July.
According to the compromise amendments, a copy of which Agence Europe has obtained, the MEPs on these parliamentary committees should stress “EU leadership in the global implementation of the SDGs remains crucial, especially in light of multiple geopolitical challenges and ongoing crises”. MEPs could call for “reverse stagnation or regression, and to facilitate and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs”.
The draft also stresses the need to strengthen the coherence of European policies, by integrating the SDGs across all sectors, including trade, agricultural, energy and cohesion policies.
The text warns of the insufficient pace at which the SDGs are being implemented, pointing to negative trends in the EU, particularly with regard to the ecological transition, “inclusive” governance, gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights.
If approved on Tuesday, the draft report should be put to the vote at the European Parliament plenary session on 7 July.
