Strongly condemning the violent attacks and ensuing clashes in southern Syria over the last few days, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) on Thursday 8 May called for an end to the violence across the country, the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and respect for international humanitarian law and human rights in all circumstances.
According to the United Nations, more than a hundred people have been killed in sectarian clashes in recent days.
“These incidents further underline the necessity for transitional authorities to fulfil their responsibility in maintaining order and protecting the population all across Syria. It is also a reminder of the urgency of transitional justice and reconciliation efforts, as the only way forward for a peaceful and inclusive transition”, warned the spokesperson in a statement, adding that the EU was ready to support the country in its efforts.
The statement also called for a “swift, transparent and impartial investigation” to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
