Wopke Hoekstra in Brazil to strengthen EU cooperation with COP30 Presidency

The European Commissioner for Climate, Wopke Hoekstra, has arrived in Brasília (Brazil) for a three-day visit, until 9 April, to strengthen the EU’s cooperation with the COP30 Presidency, following the Petersberg climate dialogue at the end of March (see EUROPE 13608/9), and to exchange views with the national authorities and civil society on climate action in the country.

After meeting the Minister for Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, on Monday 7 April, the Commissioner held bilateral meetings the following day with the COP30 President-designate, André Corrêa do Lago, and a number of political representatives including Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin and the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.

He will continue his visit on 9 April in São Paulo, where he will meet the private sector to discuss the EU’s new Clean Industry Pact.

Although the EU is late in presenting its new nationally determined contribution (NDC) setting out climate targets for 2035, Commissioner Hoekstra has repeatedly said that it will be published before COP30 in Belém. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
