In a position paper published on Wednesday 26 March, the European University Association (EUA) has called for a partnership between political decision-makers and stakeholders in the knowledge and research sector - such as universities, research centres and businesses - to successfully implement the ‘Competitiveness Compass’, the roadmap aimed at ensuring a healthy European economy, presented on 29 January (see EUROPE 13568/1).
The EUA, which represents more than 900 institutions in 49 countries, draws attention to the key role played by universities in the European ecosystem: they serve 20 million learners, bringing knowledge, skills and innovation to society.
It calls for “framework conditions” that are conducive to greater investment in basic research, and for lifelong learning to be recognised as a university mission. Finally, it proposes to make the circulation of knowledge a genuine “fifth freedom” within the single market.
