Worried” by European Commission’s silence in face of Elon Musk’s fascist salute, Per Clausen addresses Ursula von der Leyen directly

After receiving no response ten days after sending a letter asking the European Commission’s coordinator for combating antisemitism and promoting Jewish life, Katharina von Schnurbein, to react to Elon Musk’s fascist salute at the inauguration of US President Donald Trump (see EUROPE 13567/8), Per Clausen MEP (The Left, Danish) has taken further action.

Saying he was “both surprised and worried” in a press release published on Wednesday 5 February, the MEP announced that the previous day he had sent a new letter, this time to the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as a written parliamentary question to which the Commission is obliged to respond.

Although Per Clausen considers that further silence from the Commission would be astonishing, he stated: “Should that happen, then we will need to dust of the full parliamentary toolbox we have at our disposal. We should not simply pretend something like this didn’t happen. History has shown that this is not an effective strategy”.
