S&D MEPs have reaffirmed the values and principles that will underpin their work during the current legislative term at European level, in a declaration they adopted on Tuesday 4 February at a seminar in Genval.
We will defend a “pro-people agenda”, they assured. This will mean continuing their fight to preserve democratic standards, in both physical and online environments, as well as the European social model. Citizens must also have the right to quality education, jobs, housing and health, add the MEPs.
The S&D Group maintains its support for environmental and climate commitments, provided that there is a fair transition. Of course, the European economy must be competitive, but “in a way that serves people, businesses and the planet alike”. According to the Social Democrats, such an approach requires increased investment, particularly public investment through a strengthened EU budget and “permanent (budgetary) capacity to invest in public goods”. And they stressed that the richest social groups should pay their “fair share of taxes”.
