05/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – The three European Commission reports published on Tuesday 4 February on the state of water in Europe (see EUROPE 13572/9) are proof that “Member States have failed to protect citizens from the effects of droughts, floods and rising sea levels, or to ensure sufficient quantities of good quality water”, declared the NGOs of the Living Rivers Europe coalition on the same day. How many disasters will the Member States have to wait for before they take action? – reads the press release. According to the NGOs, “our resilience and preparedness will be seriously compromised if Member States continue to neglect rivers, lakes and wetlands, and keep refusing to effectively implement the Water Framework Directive and nature-based solutions”. Member States are called upon to make water management a “national priority”. (FS)
