On Tuesday 4 February, the European Cancer Organisation called for the Beating Cancer Plan to be continued and updated after 2027.
On World Cancer Day, Commissioner for Health Olivér Várhelyi met representatives of the organisation, including its president, Csaba Dégi, to discuss the progress of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the future outlook.
Representatives of the cancer community presented the Commissioner with a fact sheet outlining the achievements of the action plan and the reasons why the plan should be continued and updated during the EU’s next multiannual financial framework (MFF).
The progress reported (https://aeur.eu/f/fcv ) includes: - world-leading cancer prevention legislation; - an update of the EU Council recommendation on smoke- and aerosol-free environments; - new legal protection for European workers against a series of carcinogenic substances (including asbestos); - unprecedented efforts to eliminate cancers caused by the papillomavirus.
The Commission has published the national cancer profiles (see EUROPE 13571/9). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
