Marta Kos calls for creation of conditions for national dialogue

In an open letter in response to several letters from Serbian academics, political representatives and civil society organisations, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos called for the conditions for an inclusive dialogue to be created.

Serbia is in the grip of major demonstrations denouncing corruption in the country, in connection with the Novi Sad disaster.

It is important that the conditions are established for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders, political actors, institutions and members of civil society to address the reforms that are necessary for the European future of Serbia”, explained Ms Kos.

She recalled that the process of joining the EU required an intense effort from society as a whole and that it was a national project.

Serbia’s path towards the European Union offers solutions to many of the issues that are at the heart of the discussion today”, said the Commissioner, pointing out that the reforms linked to the accession process would strengthen the fight against corruption, ensure the independence of the judiciary and accountability of institutions, promote media freedom and pluralism and improve electoral conditions.

Ms Kos also called for a “full, impartial and speedy” investigation into the incidents against demonstrators. “Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right that must be respected. It must be exercised peacefully and in accordance with the law”, she stressed, reiterating that no violence should be tolerated.
