On Friday 24 January, Per Clausen MEP (The Left, Danish) sent a letter to the European Commission’s Coordinator on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, Katharina von Schnurbein, calling for a response to Elon Musk’s “Nazi salute” on 20 January and the growing influence of the US far right in Europe.
The MEP links this act to Elon Musk’s behaviour on the X network, which he owns and where he “has prioritised the return of right-wing extremist users who spread toxic and dangerous content”.
“As long as our EU leaders and senior staff do not speak out against this extremism”, minorities cannot have confidence in their ability to protect them, deplores Mr Clausen. He urges Ms von Schnurbein and the European institutions to condemn this gesture publicly to show that the EU does not tolerate any Nazi symbol, regardless of the sender or their influence.
To date, Ms von Schnurbein and her team have not replied to the MEP, according to a source close to him. We were told that there would be a delay until this Thursday before any further measures were considered.
