28/01/25 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 28 January, the European Commission announced new humanitarian aid worth an initial €60 million for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2025. This support is intended to meet the urgent needs of people displaced by the recent conflicts in the east of the country, particularly around Goma. Since Monday, the main city in North Kivu has been the scene of violent fighting between the ‘M23’ rebels, backed by Rwandan troops, and the Congolese army (see EUROPE 13566/8). “Despite the fact that humanitarian access remains a challenge for our partners due to the severity of the fighting, we will ensure that humanitarian funding will be disbursed without delay and aid will continue to be provided to those who need it the most”, said the European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management in a statement on Tuesday.
