On Tuesday 28 January, Carlien Scheele, Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), presented the agency’s work programme for 2025, aimed at strengthening gender equality within the European Union.
She reiterated her objective of supporting the rotating Presidencies of the Council of the EU - currently that of Poland - through research into the progress made since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action thirty years ago (see EUROPE 13539/24).
The EIGE will also support the promotion of inclusive transition in the digital and green sectors, with a view to ensuring greater competitiveness and resilience for the Union.
The year 2025 will also see new surveys on the distribution of care responsibilities between men and women, as part of the European Care Strategy adopted in 2022. This data will feed into the gender equality index and help shape public policy.
The fight against gender-based violence remains a major priority. While one woman in three is a victim of violence in the EU, as Ms Scheel pointed out, the EIGE has published in-depth, comparative analyses in collaboration with Eurostat and the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (see EUROPE 13537/21), and will continue to do so.
Finally, the EIGE will also support the implementation of the European directive on combating violence against women, adopted last year (see EUROPE 13431/33), by providing both expertise and the necessary tools to the Member States. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
