13/11/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 13 November, the ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) approved the European certification framework for carbon removals, with a view to its formal adoption by the Council of the EU at the ‘General Affairs’ Council meeting on 19 November. Parliament adopted its position on the regulation on 10 April (see EUROPE 13388/19), followed by a corrigendum adopted at the 21-24 October plenary session reflecting the interinstitutional compromise reached with the EU Council on 20 February (see EUROPE 13354/3). If the latter approves Parliament’s position, the legislative act will then be published in the EU’s Official Journal. This certification framework aims to encourage private investment and develop voluntary carbon markets, while respecting climate integrity and preventing greenwashing. (PLD)
