European Commission launches a market observatory for olive oil sector

The European Olive Oil and Table Olives Market Observatory held its first meeting on Monday 11 November, marking an important step in the European Commission’s efforts to promote market transparency and cooperation in the olive sector.

The European Olive Oil and Table Olives Market Observatory will serve as a platform for discussion and cooperation between experts representing the entire supply chain, from producers to exporters. This new observatory will build on the market observatories already in place for several agricultural sectors, notably milk, crops and fruit and vegetables. This group of experts will produce reports and provide market information accessible to all.

The EU is the world’s leading producer, consumer and exporter of olive oil.

At the meeting of the Special Committee on Agriculture (SCA) on 4 November, the European Commission reported that the olive oil sector had suffered two consecutive poor harvests in Spain due to drought, leading to a surge in prices and a reduction in exports to the main markets.

Consumption, meanwhile, is expected to have fallen less sharply than forecast. Prices are reportedly falling at the moment, against the backdrop of a good harvest this year. Production is set to increase in the future. The CAP offers a wide range of tools: decoupled and coupled income support, support for investment and research into sustainability, and promotion programmes.
